On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of being invited to The Dorchester Hotel in London, as a finalist in the NatWest Everywoman Awards.

Before the awards ceremony, I entered a room, to find myself in standing in the middle of the most amazing businesswomen in the UK today. Women of all ages, nationalities and industries. Each of us sharing experiences and supporting each other.

What was great about the Everywoman awards, is the union of women who came together to celebrate women in business.

I discovered that win or lose, it is the people that you meet along the journey, that in fact, turn out to be more important than a title on a trophy.

In my category (under 25's) I met two amazing girls. Samantha who won the award, and Carol-Ann who traveled all the way from Scotland to be there.

Now I know personally, how winning an award can not only boost your confidence in yourself, but it can also give other people more confidence in you and your company.

I was really delighted for Sam to take the title, as I know that during the next venture of her business it will take her above and beyond anything she could have hoped for.

I wish all of the wonderful women I met the best of luck in the future.

So if next year you fancy entering the awards go on - you have nothing to lose!

Its tomorrow... Everywoman Awards

The day is dawning... and tomorrow I shall be at The Dorchester in London waiting to see who has won that all important NatWest Everywoman Award.

I have just had my nails done, and tomorrow I shall be visited at 6am by my wonderful hairdresser and friend Michelle - who will be making me feel powerful and confident.

I have to say I am very nervous as despite all of my achievements to date this is by far potentially the biggest one.

I wish my fellow finalists Sam (who has come to be a good friend of mine) and Carol-Ann who I have yet to meet the very best of luck. Win, lose or draw I think it will be a fantastic day!

We have recently launched another new website for Suffolk company, The Mobile Hairstylist (headed by Michelle Hilbery).

She takes the pressure off any occasion by coming to do your hair in the comfort of your own home or in any location. With numerous qualifications and a creative flair Michelle creates some fantastic styles!

I have had the experience of having my hair done by Michelle, and I think she is amazing. I was blown away by her perfectionism and imaginative styles. I have also got to know her personally, and she is a very lovely person too, which I think always helps to relax you whilst you have your hair done.

Another day with Apparition Marketing & Design!

Today has been a very eventful day!

I spent a lot of the morning researching some potential ideas that Rachel has come up with for the Apparition offices, and then Rachel was able to take me to have a quick look at the offices which was very exciting!

After a very delicious lunch (creamy soup is necessary when it’s this cold!) I was asked to offer some help in regards to clothes shopping...how could I refuse? I am very proud to say that Rachel has been nominated for the Everywomans Award for most inspiring businesswoman.

The ceremony will be held at London’s Dorchester Hotel, so needless to say Rachel needed a lovely outfit! I was more than happy to oblige with shopping duties and we found the perfect dress in a fairly short amount of time during our lunch break!

The lady in Javelin was very helpful! We like to shop locally after all.

I am settling in very quickly with Rachel (and Archie of course!) and I love learning as I go along. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she will continue to need my help in the future :)

Showing the determination and initiative of a business owner with decades of experience, 25 year old Rachel Ducker has had an incredible career so far with her company Apparition Marketing and Design. Today the Suffolk-based businesswoman is named as a leading contender for this year’s NatWest everywoman Awards, one of Britain’s most revered prizes honouring British entrepreneurial success.

University is not the right course for everyone and Rachel Ducker saw enterprise as her future. Eventually she decided to launch her own company from her bedroom at her parents’ home. NEW WORK - Annual Report for UCL

We have been busy again at Apparition over the last few months for University College London.

Back in 2010 our very first job for UCL was to create a modern but clean, annual report for the department of Bio-processing. This year we were given the task of coming up with something event slicker.

Sticking to the brand guidelines, we came up with a green themed cover, picking out elements of this throughout the inside of the report.

To make the design more interesting we simply picked out elements and images to highlight certain areas.

Karen Smith - Director of Bio-process, was delighted with the end result.

Could you be Bury's next top model?

Local retailer, Bury Bridal Rooms, have teamed up with the award winning marketing firm, Apparition Marketing and Design Ltd, to launch a fabulous competition in search for the next ‘Bury Bridal’ model.

The Bridal Rooms, founded by Debi Ready-Bond and Tara Houseago, opened it’s doors to the public in August this year, in place of what used to be the J2 clothing store, on the corner of Brentgovel Street.

Bury Bridal offer a superior level of service to ensure choosing a wedding dress is a memorable experience. The store has a private dressing room with changing area, guest seating area as well as a personal advisor so that their clients can take time to choose that dream dress without feeling rushed.

Debi states, “We are searching for a model who will be the first to wear our very own designer dresses from Clare Perkins Couture”.

“She will be the star of the first Bury Bridal fashion show of 2012, on January 29^th at Bury St Edmunds Farmers club. Our model will also be wearing a selection of our other dresses from Fulara & Zywczyk, Grace Harrington Courtier and Ring-G.”

This competition is also being strongly support by other local businesses that have kindly donated a selection of prizes.

Included is a photo shoot with local photographer Alex Kilbee, vouchers from Lilyo, Hair, Chica Shoes and SK, and a selection of prizes from Bella Lingerie, Javelin, plus many more.

Contenders are asked to email one headshot and one full-length shot, along with 50 words on why you should win.

This week our team at Apparition Marketing and Design Ltd have successfully put live the Suffolk Firework Website.

Every year local estate, Heveningham Hall hosts its annual bonfire and fireworks display. This year the fireworks are being held on Saturday 5th November 2011 (Gates open 5.30 pm.)

All proceeds to the Heveningham Hall Country Fair Trust, a local charity supporting diverse causes within the community and organisations from further afield which benefit local people.

We were delighted to be asked by Heveningham Hall to take on this project. Everyone is very please with the results, and thanks to our website guru Adam, we turned this website build around in less than a day. Thanks Ads!

Latest Work... UCL MBI Folder

Over the past few weeks Apparition, have been really busy working for UCL (University College London.)

Our task once again this year, was to put together a creative folder which would host the module flyers for the UCL MBI courses for 2011-12.

We have structured the folder so that the 13 modules are split into two halves with the contents listed on each side. This therefore makes it easy to find the module you are looking for.

So everything has been thought about from the usability of the folder to the aesthetics!

By abiding by UCL's house styles this year we have gone for a bright pink version. This makes the folder stand out from last years green one.

Our designer Andrew had the task of collaborating all of the information and coming up with something exciting and new! So well done Andrew!

Karen Smith 'Director of Bioprocess Leadership at The Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering said the design was "super." She was thrilled with the outcome and had very little changes to the designs excepting a couple of date changes.

My day working for Apparition - By Becky Wilson

My day has gone really quickly, which can only mean it has been an enjoyable one!

I spent the morning emailing various companies about a charity event that apparition is co-organising called Sound of Silence, which helps women who have been victims of war violence to rebuild their lives.

My job was to inform the companies about the event and see if they could help out in terms of donations, or if they simply wanted to come along and support a good cause.

One email I received back was from Javelin, a fashion shop in Bury St Edmunds, offering a very kind donation of a Marc b bag as a raffle prize. It was very satisfying to see that my efforts had made a difference and it was lovely to receive some recognition for how much effort the charity is putting towards such a good cause.

After a rather tasty Starbucks lunch I got creative and took some pictures of various website designs and company booklets/leaflets that were created and designed by Apparition.

This was completely new to me so I can't really tell if I did a good job or not but it was certainly fun!

Rachel is really encouraging which makes me want to learn more and I feel confident to try new things.

The office here has a very relaxed yet professional feel and working with Rachel today has been a pleasure. It is great to be around someone who is so driven and bursting with ideas and I have found it very inspiring.

Random Acts of Kindness - My diary of the day

This is the place three ladies met over coffee and cake, one sunny afternoon in August... Our mission... To celebrate World Metal Health Day and create more awareness and happiness by holding a 'Random acts of kindess day.'

A random act of kindness is a selfless act offered in order to help or support an individual, group or organisation. It can be spontaneous or planned, the key element is that nothing is expected in return.

I decided that for my viewpoint on RAK day I would follow my usual day to see what kind people would turn up along my journey.

My first stop yesterday was Bury Bridal Rooms. For the last few weekends I have been helping out newly formed team Debs and Tara with some fashion shows.

Bury Bridal made a huge donation to Random acts of kindness day when a lady getting married popped into the shop in two weeks and needed a Chiffon Cape. Bury Bridal are going through the effort to outsource one, this is something that will be of no financial value to their new business, however the girls were kind enough to offer. Sometimes it is by going the extra mile we can sometimes make a huge difference.

After seeing Debs I grabbed my puppy Archie and jumped into my car and headed towards Framlingham for my 8 week haircut. As I was in a dilemma about leaving Archie on his own for too long my parents kindly offered to have him for the day. This was their RAK. Sometimes it is by going the extra mile we can sometimes make a huge difference.

My hairdresser Hayley Kerridge of the Carly Hill Hair, went out of her way to find a style that suited me. She even made herself late for her next client by giving me all of her energy. Sometimes it is by going the extra mile we can sometimes make a huge difference.

After we finished Hayley Kerridge asked me to go for a quick coffee with her. She then asked me if I would produce her some invitations for her wedding next year. Without even thinking my RAK was to offer these to her FOC as my kind act of the day.

Finally my last meeting of the day was at the Award Winning Baileys2 in Bury St Edmunds. The shop usually closes at 4pm, however as Louise Tyrells RAK she let me and my client stay as long as we needed to, to finish our meeting. Sometimes it is by going the extra mile we can sometimes make a huge difference.

So what did I learn from RAK day?

Well firstly we should all do kind things every day for others, this could be holding a door open, giving someone the rest of your parking ticket, even offering to help someone with their bags.

The smallest things really do make the most difference to another persons life, month, week or day.

So next time you have the chance to do something kind, feel the power within and do it.

Suffolk Business Women (SBW) Lunch

A few weeks ago I was asked to do a talk at the Suffolk Business Women lunch at Kesgrave.

When I arrived I was warmly met by Lina Hogg (chairman) and Amanda Akin of the chamber. It was lovely to attend an event full of such wonderful ladies (and a few men to my surprise!)

She has been given the title "Women of the future" for Ladies at11 sponsored by Natwest.

The perfect way for any business person to 'switch off'.

A few weeks ago I set my self the challenge for one of my EADT 'Water off a ducks back' articles, to completely switch off from work and leave my "business hat" at home.

It timed in very well for my partner James's birthday weekend, so whilst doing some research on the internet I came across a The Salthouse in Ipswich. I have been there on a few occasions for some amazing dinners, however never stayed the night. To my surprise they were offering a sailing package in collaboration with their neighbours Viking Mariners also situated on the Waterfront.

I have never been sailing before and thought it would be a fabulous experience for us both to share.

After a blissful night in our Marina room at the Salthouse, which overlooked the beautiful harbor and featured a giant copper bath in the middle of the room, I started to feel very relaxed and James was thoroughly enjoying his birthday treat, especially as the food was so good. (He often uses his stomach to judge a stay!)

We had timed our stay perfectly for the Martine and Beer Festival along the Waterfront. It was great to be arose by the Parade walking by as we enjoyed breakfast in our room from the Balcony.

We also had the morning free to wander through the old rope making exhibitions, watch displays and even had the pleasure of meeting some pirates and hearing stories from the deep blue sea!

We could not waiting for our sailing trip to come around, it was booked for an afternoon sail starting at 2pm.

We arrived at the Viking Mariners shop and I was amazed to see such trendy, quality sailing items such as boat shoes, sailing tops, jackets. I usually shop in Crew Clothing and I have to say I was more drawn to the good hear than I am in Crew.

Once there, we met Chris who had been the friendly person behind the scenes organising my surprise sail. She had very kindly given us some waterproof clothing (just in case it rained) and introduced us to our Skipper Lee.

As I mentioned, we had not been sailing before so we had taken the precaution of some sea sickness tablets. I still had my hesitations and when I mentioned this to Lee, he immediately put us at ease and said we wouldn't need them.

Upon boarding the Catamaran 'Alchemy,' I was amazed by the size and luxury that greeted us.

As we pulled away from the harbor, James and I gave each other a look that said 'this is going to be fantastic.'

We also had on board with us a very lovely lady called Annie. I must say she really took care of us, bringing us lots of tea and biscuits and generally helping us to feel at ease and relaxed during our trip. I particularly got on very well with her, and it was nice to have her company whilst James chatted to Lee.

To my surprise Lee allowed us to sail the boat. The sailing part was quite easy however navigating the boat through the River traffic was a slightly different concern. Once ten minutes went by I felt I started to get the hang of it and felt more confident navigating through the traffic.

As I mentioned, James is very guided by his stomach, so when Annie brought our a plate of Chocolate Donuts and Carrot Cake, he was sold!

It was really lovely to enjoy the Coastal Suffolk Scenery from the water, and I felt ultimately relaxed. It was also great to pass under the Orwell bridge rather than driving over it.

An hour or two past and the clouds darkened, as we felt a drop or two of rain and put on our sailing jackets, where most people would be disappointed we certainly were not as then, we really felt like we were sailing!

Shortly after we decided to hibernate in the cabin, where I was brought a nice cold glass of Rose wine in a snug little seating area.

The thing that I liked so much about the experience with Viking Mariners is that for four hours I felt like the boat was my home, we were given clear freedom to explore and could either sit back and relax or get involved as much as we wanted to.

We were sad to arrive back at the harbor but were buzzing for the next few days and stated immediately to each other how we would love to do it again with our friends. The great thing is the options that Viking Mariners have.

I was particularly interested in the Spa Day on the river that Chris was telling me about. They also do leadership team building days out, corporate and social days out and special celebrations like we had, so something for all occasions and as far as I am aware not many companies offer this?

I would 100% recommend anyone experienced in sailing or newbies like us to try an experience with the guys at Viking, you will not be disappointed!

A new brand for Halesworth Volunteer Centre

We are please to launch the new brand for the Halesworth Volunteer Centre.

The Halesworth Volunteer Centre is based in the centre of the market town of Halesworth, Suffolk. It opened in 1986, providing a co-ordinating point for people needing voluntary help and people wishing to volunteer. One part-time member of staff was employed to co-ordinate and direct requests for help, either to existing agencies or to a suitable volunteer.

Requests for help, included shopping, help with the elderly, driving and gardening. In 1987 the centre secured financial support from Suffolk County Council to set up a social car scheme providing drivers for people unable to access public transport services.

We are please that we can contribute to these services.

Sound of Silence Chairty Event

On October 29th, at Suffolk New College, Apparition Martketing and Design are helping to support a brand new event named 'Sound of Silence.'

I was asked by Lina Hogg, (of Picasso HR and Suffolk Business Women) who is heading the event to get involved on a pro-bono basis and given the cause I was happy to do so.

We are inviting a number of businesses to hold stalls during the day as well as a number of performers including my younger brother J.Ducker who has kindly donated one of his songs "When the night has dawned" to the event to raise money. Check him out at > www.jducker.co.uk.

Also we have the beautiful Gracie Wright fresh from L.A, performing and selling her E.P during the day. Born a London Lady (now a Suffolk Gal,) Gracie tours all over the world performing, so we are incredibly lucky to have her performing for us. We also have an art exhibition as well as an African Drumming band.

Lina is working with an organisation called Women for Women International (UK). http://www.womenforwomen.org/about-women-for-women/women-empowering-women.php .

Women for Women International is a shining beacon of hope for those women in war-torn countries that have been victims of brutality and targeted for rape and sexual violence. WfWI helps female survivors of war to rebuild their lives by providing them with skills, knowledge and loans that enable them to support themselves, their families and their community.

We are planning a public screening of a short documentary to gain awareness and raise funds, with support from Suffolk New College, DanceEast and many other wonderful individuals, called THE GREATES SILENCE – RAPE IN CONGO.

The idea of the event is to get local businesses and members of the public to pledge to participate in a Random Acts of Kindness Day, to coincide with World Mental Health Day and as part of Suffolk Health and Wellbeing Month. The key message of this campaign is that kindness is not only good for everyone’s mental and emotional wellbeing, it’s good for business too.

A random act of kindness is a selfless act offered in order to help or support an individual, group or organisation. It can be spontaneous or planned, the key element is that nothing is expected in return.

We have designed the branding, flyers and information pack, special thanks to Andrew for his hard work on this project.

Supporting Suffolk Health and Wellbeing Month...

Suffolk Health and Wellbeing Month, which falls during October in order to coincide with World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2011, is coordinated and promoted jointly by Suffolk County Council, Suffolk Mental Health Partnership Trust and The Mind Sanctuary, on behalf of V.A.S.P (Voluntary & Statutory Partnership) and other wellbeing professionals and organisations.

Apparition Marketing and Design have agreed to support The Mind Sanctuary, with this promotion on a pro-bono basis.

Mental Health and Wellbeing affects us all in different ways it could be as simple as stress conditions, to something more severe such as bi-polar.

Either way it is great that Suffolk has grouped together these organisations to create more awareness.

Apparition Sponsors March Town Hockey Club

March Town HC is a friendly Hockey Club, with four lively sections: Men, Ladies, Mixed and Juniors.

This year Apparition Marketing and Design has been asked to sponsor the Men's 1st team.

Last season saw the March Town Men’s 1st XI top the Division 2N table and reach their highest league position of all time. Captained by virtuoso James Mansfield they now do battle in Division 1!

Launch of the Young Persons Theatre Project

Apparition Marketing and Design have been assisting the launch of series of new weekend classes are set to launch on Saturday 10th September 2011, The Young Persons Theatre Project has two purpose built professional studios, plus a theatre situated in the performing arts block at the Suffolk New College in the heart of Ipswich.

The course is aimed to tutor young people between the ages of 6 and 19 years old, and train them in the key areas of the performing arts. Classes have been created to enlighten the student’s energy, passion and motivation within this sector to expand their skill sets.

TYPTP program includes instruction from nine skilled tutors who come with a wide range of experience and professionally trained actors, dancers and theatre coaches. They will cover a range of topics including dance, TV coaching, voice training, mime and stage fighting amongst other various techniques, all within purpose built facilities.

Two international sponsors have agreed to support the projected, by providing financial support for four young students by paying for their tuition for 12 months.

The project has been back by lead patrons who include Neil Morrissey, star of the TV series ‘Men Behaving Badly’, and actress Jenny Agutter, who has appeared in such films as ‘The Railway Children’ and ‘An American Werewolf in London.’

TYPTP also have on board a National Theatre and TV agency (Mr Producer) they have agreed to be involved from day one and will monitor students throughout the year the potential to offer representation to those students who show real potential.

To top it all off at the end of the summer term there will be show case at the theatre in front of parents and casting agents to show off the young people, ability, talents an potential.

Esther Ling Photography

Is anyone in need of some new photography?... Well we know just the person!

A few weeks ago I had Esther Ling round to take some shoots for a new website we were working on.

Esther is an expert in wedding and portrait commissions within the UK and Internationally. After looking at some of Esther Ling's Wedding Photography I was so impressed with her work, I had to request her services!

It was about time I had some photos done for my new website found at www.rachelducker.com.

Esther captured the exact image I was looking for and I was extremely impressed with the results.

Her approach is Intuitive, spontaneous, informal and I can confirm this is the person that I took my photos.

The National Achievers Congress

Last weekend I was lucky enough to be personally invited by Tony Robbins. I took along with me my best friend, aka dad!

Some of you may know Tony from his starring role in the movie "Shallow Hal" others may know him as the man who has worked with some of the world’s most famous people, including presidents, royalty and many other famous personalities.

He has become recognised around the globe for his own particular style, using techniques that can be obtained from his personal coaching, seminars, audiotapes and CDs.

I have been to one of his seminars before, in fact, six years ago when I was still in employment with my first company.

Back then the course involved Tony teaching us how to get in the mind set to walk on fire. I can say that indeed I completed that course and successfully walked over a few meters of hot cole! It was amazing to see my feet steam at the end, to actually see that it was real.

I can tell you as a business owner to now, hear those wise words, hints and tips Tony speaks I have certainly taken more on board for my own businesses.

Other key guest speakers also included two of my other role models Lord Sugar and Richard Branson.

Though as much as I admire them, I do not believe they had the energy Tony did to get around 10,000 off there seats jumping to the latest music and repeating power words.

My dad and I had so much fun and we have certainly been buzzing ever since!

Whatever Tony's magic is we should all carry a little bit with us. Tony has become the voice in my head saying 'yes you can.'

The day was a great one to celebrate business and those who can achieve within it be them directors, managers or employers I think everyone went away having gained a little bit more!

The Anglian Business Awards

We had a fabulous night last week at the Anglian Business Awards.

It was a very smooth running evening with great Adnams Champagne, a guest speaker John Humphries from BBC radio four, who was very funny plus amazing food from trainees at Milsoms.

To see Archant put on such a wonderful event I felt very proud of my association with the EADT newspaper paper.

As some of you may know our Suffolk Creative Agency Apparition Marketing and Design were up for the best start-up business of the year along with my good friend Hayley Sparkes and Together Property also based in Bury.

Hayley and I decided to put on a united front and we went to the event together along with our partners Craig and James. In a professional way we agreed to be happy for who ever won and if it was one of the two of us it would be a win win!

Sadly we were not successful this time, however I am very proud to announce that Gorgeous Star PR set up by Hayley won the award.

I first met Hayley she worked for SK spa in Bury St Edmunds, she really wanted to set up her own business and I said well why don't you?

So I referred Hayley to my accountant who helped her to set up the business and donated her a website. This was enough to get her up and running and the rest was down to her! She has a great way with people which is what judges commented on during the awards.

Also during the night I bumped into a few good friends of mine, my good friend Esther Ling who is an amazing wedding photographer in Suffolk, along with her husband Ed Ling (who most of you may know! I swear he is Mr Facebook!)

And lastly the end of the night ended with a catch up with my good friend (head of the IOD and Ipswich building society) Paul Winter who was shortlisted for business person of the year award.

Another highlight was meeting those Crafty boys and girls from Crafted Media, who very kindly poured me one more glass of champagne (that I probably shouldn't have had) to celebrate their success of winning best small business. Which is great for the design industry in the area! Well done guys and ps. Tom I am on to you!

We have won awards, gained some huge clients as well as launching a sister company in April called Time2Shine (mentoring young people and start up businesses) - but now I am delighted to add something else to that list...

A few months ago I met a wonderful man named Tim Allsop who had an idea he wanted to bring to life, but wanted to invest in Apparitions marketing support and expertise as a Creative Agency in Suffolk.

So over the last month we have been meeting regularly to discuss Tim's new project.

The Young Person's Theatre Project has been designed to develop a greater understanding of the performing arts to young people between the ages of 6-19 years old.

So we came up with a funky brand (shown below) and have just launched the new website found at www.typtp.co.uk.

Last week I was honored to be invited to Cambridge 105 fm, to co-present with my good friend Stuart Grant on the drive time show.

Stu (previously on Kiss fm's breakfast show) is live for three hours of the best music to get you home. The show includes the latest news, sport & weather; up to the minute traffic & travel and features.

Cambridge105 is a volunteer-based, community-owned organisation, providing a broadcast voice for Cambridge, seven days a week.

We had a great time chatting about our favourite snacks, bantering... and I have to admit I was very well looked after as Mr Grant makes a fabulous cuppa!

I hope to be invited back sometime soon!

Branding for Vulchem Hygine Supplies

Vulchem Hygines Suppies is based in Bury St Edmunds, they are are specialists in the supply of all Workplace Safety Equipment, Cleaning and Hygiene Products, Spill Safety, Packaging and Workwear.

We were approached by Kevin Ager the Director of Vulchem, with the task of branding the new company. The brief was to keep it clean and incorporate green, as the are an environmentally friendly company.

One was picked from a handful of ideas and this is now being put into the new website Apparition's first Ecommerce project.

This is an exciting time for us all - the new site will be launched shortly.

The EEBW Awards 2010-11

On Thursday night myself and good friend and business college Kate Rose of Rose McGrory attended the East of England Businesswoman of the year awards, at The West Wing (Ickworth House, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.)

This year I was able to attend wearing a slightly different hat as a judge, rather than a finalist. I have to say it was much more relaxing and I didn't envy the nerves the finalists must have had!

I was so thrilled to be in a room of such talented businesswoman, one in particular from my home town of Bury St Edmunds.

Claire Bishop of Nemco Utilities won The 'Rising Star' of the year award. I was lucky enough to judge Claire, and watch her presentation whilst joining the other judges on the panel at Medimmune last month.

I was impressed with Claire's confidence, loyalty to her organisation and I have to say after spending some 'out of the boardroom' time with her on Thursday evening, can honestly say she is a very genuine, caring and down to earth young lady.

I was also able to catch up with one of my inspirational mentors Paul Winter head of the IOD and Ipswich Building Society, and may I add what a great job he did presenting the evening.

Recognition should also go to our Chairman Jane Cox, and the other judges on the panel. Without them the awards would not be able to continue its success.

I have to confess no matter how good my evening was, it could have never have topped winning the Young Businesswoman of the year award at last years ceremony, but it brought back many happy memories as I was able to catch up with old faces and see the new talent coming through.

I am looking forward to having more of a role within the awards as they continue their success.

Rachel Ducker by Michael Waller-Bridge

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure to be photographed by the well known Photographer Michael Waller-Bridge, the husband of my dear friend and client International artist Rosemary Goodenough.

Michael gained a BSc Honours degree in Theoretical Physics from Kent University, followed by a Master's in History of Science and Technology at Imperial College London and postgraduate experience at CERN, the international particle physics Lab near Geneva.

His passion for the visual arts was ignited by works in New York's Museum of Holography and he began his work in this medium by studying at the New York School of Holography where he was taught by Dan Schweitzer and Sam Moree after which he set up his own Studio in London.

He also co-created a venture associated with Imperial College which supported research in colour holography and his curiosity led him into involvement in other fields and adventures, including co-founding Europe's first independent fully electronic stock exchange whilst developing his work in photography.

Works created in his Studio were acquired for various Private Collections including the Jonathan Ross Hologram Collection. He was commissioned to make unique pieces for, amongst others, Molinare (TV and Film), Amerada Hess (Oil and Gas) and the London Stock Exchange.

So as you can imagine I feel quite honored to have gain this MW-B original.

Michael captured the natural side of myself, whilst keeping the portrait very styled to business but in the nice way I always preach about.

I thought I would publicly thank Michael and Rosemary for their time, and share the chosen image with you all.

The Vanessa Show on channel 5 ... third appearance

So yesterday was a very surreal day for me as I was invited back on Channel 5's "The Vanessa Show" this time not as a Sofa Surfer but as a main guest on the panel with Vanessa herself.

The topic was 'do you have to be tough as a woman in business and life'?

My answer to that was no.

I do not believe you have to be aggressive or bitchy to get to where you want d well in either. I live by the rule of treat people how you want to be treated. I think in business you can have a silent power. As Ben mentions on the show sometimes saying nothing is more powerful. Perhaps in some businesses you do have to be strong but there can be a nice way of doing this.

Along side me was editor of Real People magazine Samm Taylor. She had some great points and for her personally she felt she had to be tough as a woman in her industry.

Although this opposes my view I dont think there is a right or wrong answer - just a matter of preference and for me I can walk with my head held high knowing I have been a nice person.

Vanessa mentioned the fact I could be naive, which is a common stereotype for "nice people" however I disagree and thing this is a strength in itself as you can create lasting relationships in work and social life. After all without relationships and collaboration what are we working for?

The day was a whirlwind I have to say the most daunting part for me was having my make up done in Vanessa's make up room next to her! She was very nice and I joked 'You will be gentle with me on air!'

Vanessa's husband Ben was there, who I have been in touch with regularly and would love to say has become a friend of mine. He is very supportive and I love his songs from the Phats and Small days!

I was also lucky enough to meet some lovely celebrities.

Jenny Eclair is a famous Comedian and Star of ITV's 'Celebrity Get Me Out of Here'. In the Green room we had a bit of a chat and all helped her with her crossword (though I think I was the least helpful!) A very down to earth woman despite reputation.

After the show I also met ex UB40 star Ali Campbell, again another wonderful person. Not only does he have a voice that is kind on the ears but a kind heart, he gave me a signed copy of his new album "Great British Songs" which I highly recommend.

Adding to that list was a truly inspirational women, Katie Hopkins (from BBCs The Apprentice.) We chatted for quite some time about business, future growth and I can honestly say she is one switched on woman, someone who I hope I can aspire to one day and I wish her all the luck in the world (not that she needs it.)

Lastly the one we all know as Victor, Star of Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother. I have to say when you see him of TV you would think he might be quite intimidating, with his slick attitude and cool style, but a real sweetheart and someone who I know hope to be working with in the future.

So not often can I say I spent the afternoon with a room full of lovely celebrities and had one of the best afternoons of my life! *Starstruck!*

Thank you Six Whiting Street!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of being invited as a guest on Channel 5's 'The Vanessa Show'.

Of course being a woman the first thing that popped into my head was "Oh no what am I going to wear."

Now from reading my business columns (Water off a Ducks Back) you will know that I am a huge believer in local businesses collaborating to help each other, and Giles at Six Whiting Street, a clothes shop in Bury St Edmunds, has managed to help me out with my dilemma.

So for the Vanessa Show they guys at Six Whiting Street provided me with some skinny Black Armani Jeans, with a white camisole top by Theory - accessoried by the new Paul Smith scarf and a Grey linen Armani fitted Jacket.

The clothes made me feel very confident and I felt I had a relaxed approach to my business topic which reflected in my outfit.

So I would like to personally thank Giles and his staff I would highly recommend them for business and pleasure... (I have a new favourite shop too!)

Judging the EEBW Awards

Yesterday eight female businesswoman met to discuss who will win the next East of England businesswomen of the year awards.

As one of those judges I was incredibly impressed with the caliber of entries.

The awards are to celebrate women in business and to share inspiration around the business community.

The results will be announced at a black tie event held at the Ickworth Hotel in Bury St Edmunds at the end of May.

Apparition will be showing support by attending the event. (And we are looking forward to it!)

Since 2005 when the company was established, Moore & Stone Carpentry and Building has created a reputation in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, Cambridge and elsewhere in East Anglia both for its construction of new buildings and renovation of historic and listed buildings.

The Vanessa Show on channel 5

Last week myself and Gorgeous Star PR Director Hayley Sparkes were lucky enough to be invited on The Vanessa Show on Channel 5 hosted by Vanessa Feltz.

We traveled down to Princess Productions in Londons Queensbridge, to a very snazzy studio situated above a shopping mall (of all places!)

Upon arrival we met two very lovely people called Keira and Daren who help to organise the show along with Ben Ofoedu (Vanessa's husband and in Phats and Small.) He was a really nice guy, good to know not all celebrities are stuck up.

I have to say the highlight of the day was meeting Gavin and Staceys Larry Lamb. One of the most down to earth people I have come across.

So what did Hayley and I do on the show?

We were asked to give our opinions on the topics of manners and affairs. I have to say it was such a wonderful experience, and good news they want us back.

Hayley and I will be going back to the studios on 7th April to record another show. Word also has it that the producers are meeting to discuss us both further. Stay tuned...

Call from an old friend...

I had an out of the blue call from an old friend who I met at the Best of Bury some time ago. I am pleased to say he is doing very well with his Entertainment business. We had a good catch up which inspired me to write a little post about his growing business.

Our billboard for Mirror Image is up...

Just before Christmas we were asked by our clients at Mirror Image (who specialise in bespoke furniture) to come up with a nifty billboard design which will be placed at the crossroads of Sweetbriar Industrial Estate in Norwich.

We also have one displayed at the Chaplefield Shopping Center.

The design was created by Andrew, and Geoff - the director - was very pleased with the end result.

A little treat for the office...

The other day James shared with us this new craze... called "Graze".

The idea is that you go on the website and order a box of snacks to graze on throughout the day.

It then turns up first class in the post for your next working day!

I thought the idea was rather genius so I wanted to give it a go.

So yesterday a very well designed and creative box turned up at my door, the snacks yum, and it was fun.

We are giving a big thumbs up to Graze!

A trip to visit our client UCL (University College London)

On Thursday I took a little trip to London to visit one of Apparition Marketing and Designs most prestigious clients to date, UCL on Gower Street.

London is a big place and to my disbelief I was surprised to see that UCL in fact actually owned most of the street!

The campus itself was really quirky with a mixture of older style buildings, combined with modern signage... the buzz around the place was amazing. They even had their very own Costa Cafe!

Once I got there I was greeted by the wonderful Karen Smith who is the director of bio-process leadership.

I had a few meetings with various UCL staff and was then given a little tour (or a large one should I say!)

I was shown around the 'Pilate Plant' also known as 'the donut.'

It was amazing to see where treatments such as Penicillin (which I am potentially allergic to!) were created. The amount of technology was astounding. Karen mentioned one piece of equipment may cost more than my house!

I was also privileged to meet Nigel J Titchener-Hooker, who was the head of department and director for The Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering.

Though the titles were daunting for a small town girl like me - they really were lovely people.

Karen also told me to make sure I popped to the shops before traveling home, and that is exactly what I did!

A new site was launched over the weekend for Bury St Edmunds Osteopaths.

An 'inspirational' talk at the Swan in Beccles...

Yesterday I was delighted to be invited to The Swan in Beccles. I was asked to provide a motivational and inspirational talk at the 'Ladies and Lunch' networking event.

The 'Ladies at Lunch' concept was born in November last year and launched with a fashion show (in which I took part in - see below picture) it was a really enjoyable day for all those who attended, myself and even the staff.

The next was a speaker named Robin who owns The Amber Shop in Southwold, followed by my talk yesterday, so it is a real mix up of industries. Next time is all about make up and beauty - so book now!

I hope that a lot of people gained something from the words I spoke, I always try to be open, honest and true, sending out the message you can do anything you put your mind to in this world!

It’s New Year and time for a new column, so I am here to shake things up a little in the business section during 2011 – maybe even causing a little bit of mischief along the way...

It is no secret that I am known to people for being a non-conformist businesswoman. I take the rulebook and stamp on it with my best high heels! Why? At the age of 24, I want to be the master of my own destiny, and not give someone else the pleasure of manipulating my own fate.

Most people who meet me see Rachel, not the businesswoman, but the person. They will find me in my skinny jeans, sipping a cappuccino at my favourite coffee shop Baileys2, ready to have a casual chat about how I can help them.

Is it written somewhere that as a ‘business person’ you have to act a certain way, dress to a code, follow the crowd? If there is I haven’t come across it and I certainly won’t be another sheep in that field.

When I started my business over a year ago I walked into the business community blind, from employee to director overnight, a big step up. I had no clue how to set up or run a small business and within seven months I am winning EEDA’s Young Businesswoman of the year. So I must be doing something right and I want to share this with you. Being young and naïve was probably my biggest advantage, I had no-one to tell me how to be, act or perform – I simply made it up!

I strongly believe my success comes down to following some very basic ethics - manners, respect and courtesy. My parents taught me whilst growing up, ‘treat people how you would like to be treated.’ We use it in life so why not in business?

A client is someone you would like to form a long-term relationship with, no different to a friend or partner, and from time to time some of my clients do become my friends. So why in business must we be cold and corporate when in life we can be ourselves?

I have worked for many companies in the past who treat their clients as another number, a pound sign to rub the ego of their bank balance and who were disrespectful whilst doing it. This was why I would try and change this perception of a businesswoman, you know, the one that says I am a hard-nosed battle-axe – don’t mess with me or I will feed you to the lions.

Whilst I appreciate there are times in business when you have to have a thick skin, there are ways to handle situations through peaceful means, and nine times out of ten if you are yourself, you will be straight from the start and problems should not arise.

The Apprentice... Episode Five...

Last night we saw the fifth person from this series Apprentice fired. Paloma Vivanco was subject to a firing last night, after she talked her way out of keeping her place in the show.

Personally I feel that if a person is nice it will show through in their personality and if they are not you will get to see that other side too - last night we saw Paloma's.

Lord Sugar is a nice person and clearly he wants nice people working for him, with morals, ethics and someone who can respect others. After all if someone were to represent you - you would want them to leave a good lasting impression and not as he put it "take no prisoners."

For a woman she has quite an aggressive approach on business and is very cut throat, her motives were clear in the middle of the episode where you can clearly see her plotting against Alex to be the scape goat in case the task was to fail.

We also see the cattiness again when the girls gang up on poor Alex and as irritating and cheesy as he can be I don't think he deserved that in any way. I wonder now without the ring leader in the competition will the cattiness become less apparent?

My ones to watch are still Chris, Liz and Jamie.

My predictions on next week Sandeesh, Stuart or Alex (if he doesn't pull his weight again.)

Joanna has taken Lord Sugars comments on board from a previous week (being too pushy etc) but is this making her appear too quiet now?

And as for Christopher - we haven't really seen much from him either.

The Apprentice... Episode Four...

So the fourth person in The Apprentice has now been fired!

Last week on Radio Suffolk I predicted that I was not sure how long fiery Mel would last in the competition... and I was correct in thinking that.

Last night we saw a lesson in how to sell (or not to in poor Mel's case.)

For a sales person, indeed she has the gift of the gab, however I feel she never researches or gets to know a product well enough to sell them! Plus telling a large distributor to "slip in a product" they wouldn't normally sell... not a cleaver move.

I felt for Jamie (the team leader of the losing group) as I think he was a good project manager and the sum they totaled was pretty impressive.

But I must just say - what is going on with the bickering girls again??? Surely it is not giving a fair representation of women in business, and quite embarrassing to those of us who are trying very hard to not be stereotyped.

The savior of the winning team (and for us girls) was smooth talking Liz, who demonstrated to us a perfectly good way of how to stay cool in a sales pitch.

I believe the key to a great sales person is to be yourself and not pushy. Mel was flustered, panics, broke the product on demonstration and talks her way out of the sale!

When comparing Liz to Mel, Liz allows her technical ability to sell was clear. I think she is a very strong contender for the final! Lets watch this space!

Rachel Ducker inspires at IOD's annual Aspirations in Business - Southend

Last Wednesday, Rachel Ducker, Young Businesswoman of the year, and director of Apparition Marketing and Design - a creative agency in Suffolk, visited over 100 pupils from various schools in Essex who attended the IOD's Aspirations in Business event.

At this annual event, organised by the Essex Branch of the Institute of Directors, they were hoping to inspire and educate local 16-18 year olds about the entrepreneurial business world and to expose them to the exciting possibilities that lie ahead of them.

A selected few entrepreneurs and coaches, were asked to give some brief presentations that recounts their journey to where they are now.

Letting the kids see what they did right and what they would have done differently – perhaps outlining what advice they wish you had been given should you have been fortunate enough to have attended an event like this when you were their age?

Rachel's presentation went down well, as not so long ago she was in their position and felt the kids could relate to her as a youngster herself.

"It was great to get involved with some of the planned exercises set for the kids, I enjoyed helping the them to use their initiative and think outside the box."

It was really rewarding for me to hopefully inspire those who wanted to be successful in the business world, and give advice to them - advice that I never had the opportunity to take!

I hope to have the opportunity to do this again!"

Rachel stayed until the end of the event, and answered a stream full of questions that the youngsters had been too scared to ask during her presentation.

Radio Suffolk - The Apprentice updates!

Over the past three weeks since the new series of The Apprentice has begun, Apparition's director Rachel Ducker, has been invited on Radio Suffolk on a Thursday morning to give her opinion on The Apprentice contestants and their tasks for Mark Murphy on the breakfast show.

Rachel is no stranger to Radio Suffolk and has appeared on Lesley Dolphins sofa, appeared in a report by Guy Campbell, Debated with James Hazell and now has a slot with Mark Murphy.

The young business woman of the year said "It has been very enjoyable to cast my opinion and to watch the show evolve!"

"Week one demonstrated the wrong way to do business, an aggressive approach will never get you anywhere, there is a fine line between aggression and passion."

"The girls were very embarrassing to watch on week two - being a woman in business I would not like to work with them - or for them, I would probably fire myself to escape!"

"Week three demonstrated how lack of communication can be the primary cause of a failing business, I have been in a situation where I have witnessed it first hand for a past company - they are no longer in business."
